Someone You Should Know with Host Stuart Sax and Guest Jo Giese

Stuart Sax talks with Jo Giese, a radio journalist and author who has endured a torn Achilles tendon and botched surgeries to now embrace her passion of hiking to waterfalls.

Today Patty welcomes Jo Giese, author of 'Keep Chasing Waterfalls,' She shares her story of a freak accident that left her questioning if she'd ever walk again, let alone hike. Despite a botched surgery leading to her losing her Achilles, Jo's determination and extensive rehabilitation allowed her to defy the odds and return to hiking. Jo reflects on her active life before the accident, including childhood adventures and her love for the outdoors, which eventually led to her fascination with waterfalls. She explores the scientific and emotional benefits of being near waterfalls, such as the soothing sound and negative ions that can improve mood and health. She emphasizes the kindness of strangers and the importance of community.

Jo Giese is an award-winning radio journalist, author, teacher, community activist, and former TV reporter. In her memoir Never Sit If You Can Dance: Lessons from My Mother, Giese examines the delicate and complicated relationship between mothers and daughters.

Louis Spirito’s novel Gimmie Shelter examines an unlikely bond between a man and a pit bull and the intricate relationship that saves them both.

Who among us hasn’t said, “I could write a book about my mother!” We often say such things in jest, though the quip’s foundation is actually complimentary. We study our mothers throughout most of our lives trying to piece together the enigmatic variables that result in their particular formula. For many, it takes a lifetime, yet author Jo Giese has done just this in her delightful book, Never Sit If You Can Dance, which, as you might suspect, is a line she learned from her mother.
It is baby-boomer times, simpler times that began in innocence only to explode into the roar of changing times, and author Jo Giese is raised by a stay-at-home mom named Babe. She plans to rise above her mother’s station and believes she has actually done so until later years give her the time to pause and reflect…

“Never sit if you can dance,” that’s one of the lessons author and journalist Jo Giese learned from her mother and shared with members and guests at the Ebell of Los Angeles earlier this week. Giese took the expression as the title of her book, which grew out of conversations with her mother that helped her appreciate the profound impact our mothers have on each of our lives.

Giese said she wrote the book as a gift for her mother and “all mothers everywhere who laid the groundwork that shaped us, even if we didn’t exactly recognize it or appreciate it — or them — at the time.”
